Ein nicht uninteressanter Gedanke – vor allem für alle jene, die uns dieser Tage immer vorpredigen, wie unterentwickelt die amerikanische Demokratie doch ist (vgl. Menasse oder Pilz und die Rede vom „Sheriff“-Staat)

“The United States may be said to be the only country in the world which was founded in an explicit oppoistion to Machiavellian principles. According to Machiavelli, the founder of the most renowned commonwealth of the world was a fratriciade: the foundation of political greatness is necessarily laid to crime. If we can believe Thomas Paine, all governments of the Old World have an origin of this description; their origin war conquest and tyranny. But the Independence of America was accompanied by a Revolution on the principles and practices of Governments. ‘the foundation of the United States was laid in freedom and justice, Government founded on a moral theroy, on a system of universal peace, on the indefeasable hereditary Rights of Man [….].’ This judgement is far from being obsolete. While freedom is no longer a preserve of the United States, the United States is now on the bulwark of freedom. A contemporary tyranny has its roots in Machiavelli’s thought, in the Machiavellian principle that the good end justifies every means. At least to the extant that the American reality is inseperable from the American aspiration, one cannot understand Americanism without Machiavellianism which is its opposite” (Leo Strauss, Thoughts on Macchiavelli, 1959)

In diesem Zitat steckt auch ein Imperativ für die jetzige US-Politik, geht man davon aus, dass sie von einem Netzwerk an “Straussianern” durchsetzt ist…
