The Great Divide

By Julie Blanciak*

*Julie is a friend, originally coming from Pitsburg; for many years she has been living as an actress in New York City; I can hardly remember having seen her that angry; she has sent this text by e-mail to a couple of friends.

Regardless of your feelings on the outcome of the
election yesterday, there is one thing I know that we
can all agree on - this great nation is greatly
divided. Red states, blue states; Republicans,
Democrats; and let's not even begin to talk about the
religious divide...

So on this most depressing of days, this day where we
find that George W. Bush - a man who admittedly
doesn't read; a man who believes that Jesus wants him
to be President; a man who calls himself pro-life
though he as Governor of Texas terminated more human
lives than any other governor in our history and as Commander-in-Chief of our armed forces is responsible for tens of thousands of deaths of Iraqis and American soldiers (doesn't "life" include the living? or is it only the unborn?); a man who is so concerned with Saudi Arabian interests that the country that produced nearly 75% of the 9/11 terrorists (not to mention bin Laden himself) has been actually protected by this administration - and their involvement in the attacks, financial or otherwise, has been shrouded in secrecy; a man who, as we all know, is a stupid f***ing moron - has been undeniably re-elected as the leader of the free world.

Our red half couldn't be happier. Our blue half is
really f***ing pissed off.

So I've been asking myself: Can anything be done to
amend this incredible split among our people?

The answer, resounding and simple - YES!

YES! let those red state mother f***ers have their Bush/Cheney/Halliburton/Jesus!

Let their tax dollars fund that abomination halfway around the world - ours will go to educate our childen and provide healthcare for those less fortunate.

Let them send their kids to fight a war based on corporate greed and personal vendetta - we'll send ours to college.

Let them use the Bible to determine what should be the law of the land - we'll stick with the Constitution.

Let those assholes who are so concerned about being
protected from terrorism use their own money (last
year, Dick Cheney's home state of Wyoming received
$61/person in Homeland Security grants while New York
state received less than $25/person.

Why the f**k does Wyoming need $61 per person and where is that money coming from? And a very important note, in my opinion... the places that are DIRECTLY affected by the threat of terrorism voted overwhelmingly yesterday to get our so-called "great protector" out of office - New Jersey voted for Kerry by more than 200,000 votes; New York voted for Kerry by more than a MILLION votes; and Washington, DC voted 90% for Kerry!

In other words, those who wake up everyday under an "orange alert", those who saw the attacks with their own eyes, those who lost friends and family and jobs, those who will likely be the target again - we don't buy into that bullshit fear-mongering that Bush is the only person who can protect us. Let the red states have him!

So, that's my suggestion... We are never going to
change each other, never going to bridge the divide,
so let's just get to it. (Senator-Elect) Barack Obama
gave an incredible speech at the DNC, but he was wrong
- we ARE two countries: The Red States of America and
The Blue States of America and I know the one I want
to live in. Do you?

On a personal note, I am so incredibly proud of my
people in Pennsylvania who voted for Kerry by more
than 120,000 votes... You get to come with us!

And those of you who are on the fence about which
country you want to live in, remember this - we have
the Steelers, the Eagles, the Packers, and the
Patriots while the Red States have the Dolphins, the
Cowboys and the Bengals! Need I say more?

And by no means am I excluding the independents - the Naders and the Cobbs come with us, the Peroutkas go
with the Reds, and the Badnariks will have to figure
it out for themselves.

I have one more thing to say (finally!) and this is to
all of you who have entertained the thought of moving to Canada - ARE YOU FUCKING NUTS?! This is my country and I'm not going anywhere. I am going to stay here and fight for the values - yes, VALUES (Democrats have
them too, you know) - that make this country great. I
am so sick of this notion of "compassion" from people
who are more interested in judging others and
restricting rights than actually making the world a
better place for everyone to live in. Well, that's
the country I want to live in - The Blue States of
America! Who's with me?

(I have also sent this to my friends abroad so they
can see that we are not all bible-thumping
war-mongering lunatics...)

The first blogged election

They came, they saw, they blogged. Across the nation, an army of amateur pundits descended on polling places, looked around, then raced to their keyboards to share their impressions with the world as voting began in what's been called the first blogged election. But with the polls closed - and network anchors, stung by the fiasco of 2000, showing unusual caution - the usually loquacious bloggers found themselves with little to say. They were as much in the dark as the rest of us: Vote counts were delayed by what appeared to be a record turnout, and "too close to call" became the mantra of the moment. Meint der Staff Writer vom "Philly Inquirer". Naja...

Buzzmachine makes the difference

Zur Debatte um Geschwindikeit, Media-Coverage in Blogs und die Veröffentlichung von exit polls, mein quote of the day:

Jeff Jarvis: I promise to... Support the President, even if I didn't vote for him..... Criticize the President, even if I did vote for him..... Uphold standards of civilized discourse in blogs and in media while pushing both to be better.... Unite as a nation, putting country over party, as we work together to make America better.
